LOCATION
Trailing points with the refuge siding in the up main line.
The 1pm express pasenger train from Glasgo to London passed the up distant signal at caution and the up outer and inner home signals at danger and collided sidelong at about 60-65 mph with the fourthwagon of goods train which was being set back off the up main line into the refuge siding to clear the loine for the express.
CAUSE;
The Driver wrongly passed the signals at danger.

FORMATIONS;
The express-Princess Coronation'class Pcific np 6231 Duchess of Atboll,a bogiebrakevan 11 coaches and a bogie brakevan.
The goods train -Standard Class 4f 0-6-0 no 4324 ,45 wagons and brakevan.
DAMAGE
The Pcific and the first vehicle wereoverturned ,and several coaches were derailed but remained upright and in line'
CASUALTIES;
The driver and the fireman of the Pacific were killed A total of 31 passengers were taken to hospital.
SIGNALLING
Absolute block with semaphore signals,A colour -light up distant signal had been planned prewar but had yet been installed.
POSSABLE SAFETY MEASURES;
ATC/AWS was the only reliable safeguard in case like this
