Location Euston no 4 signal box up slow line
The 7.15 am electric multiple-unit from Watford to Euston,running at 20-30 mph under clear signals,crashed into the rear of the 5.30am cup final excursion from Coventry to Euston,which was standing at Euston No 4 signal box up slow line home signal ,Although all the coaches of the excursion train were gas -lit ,there was no fire.
CAUSE:
Signalman's error.
The signal man at Euston No 4 signal box had just dealt with an up Scotch express on the up fast line,but he sent the Train out of Section's signal for that train to Camden No 1 signal box on the up slow line block instrument in error.
He was then offered ,and accepted the 7.15 am EMU from Watford,resulting in the collision.
FORMATION :
The Watford train was a six -car EMU.
casualties:
five passengers were killed and 68 were injured.
SIGNALLING
Absolute block .There was no track circuits at Euston No 4 up home signals .The signal box had an electrically operated minature lever frame.
POSSABLE SAFETY MEASURES
A track circuit at the up slow line home signal with appropriate signalling controls,would have prevented the accident.
