UDDINGSTON

LOCATION:

Trailing crossover at Uddingston at Junction.

The 1.30pm express passenger train from Euston to Glasgow became derailed whilst travelling at moderate speed.

CAUSE:

it had been necessary to isolate a defective brake cylinder at Carlisle ,but the carriage examiner had omitted to release the brake first .The wheels, which were at the front of the leading bogie on the fifth coach were therefore locked and during the onward journey a groove had been worn in the middle of the tyre creating a lip on the outside edge which damaged a wing rail as it passed through a trailing crossover causing the following coaches to become derailed..

FORMATION

Princess Coronation class pacific no 46235 City of Birmingham and 12 vehicles vacuum braked.

DAMAGE

six coaches were derailed the last two being severely damaged in sidelong collision with wagons on adjoining line.

CASUALTIES:

One passenger was killed four passengers and the guard were injured.
