3.16 am Monday 15 May 1944

Location

Approx. 1 mile South of Gretna junction.

The 8.40 pm sleeping car express from Euston to Glasgow ST Enoch running under clear signals at about 55mph became completely derailed except for the last two vehicles.

CAUSE

Unsatisfactory nature of subsoil below the permanent way,which had been undergoing extensive maintenance work previous day.

FORMATION

Princess Coronation class pacific no 6225 Duchess of Gloucester with 12 bogie vehicles including 12 –wheel sleepers .

DAMAGE:

The engine turned over at 45 angle while the tender was turned on to it’s side The whole train except the last two vehicles was derailed.

CASUALTIES

Three passengers were killed.

POSSABLE Safety measures.

Temporary speed restrictions should be imposed after such work.

LOCATION:

Trailing crossover at Uddingston at Junction.

The 1.30pm express passenger train from Euston to Glasgow became derailed whilst travelling at moderate speed.

CAUSE:

it had been necessary to isolate a defective brake cylinder at Carlisle ,but the carriage examiner had omitted to release the brake first .The wheels, which were at the front of the leading bogie on the fifth coach were therefore locked and during the onward journey a groove had been worn in the middle of ...

7.16 pm Saturday 7 December 1946

location Down fast line just south of Stafford no 4 signal box.

The 4.35 pm stopping passenger train from Coventry to Stafford was standing on the down fast line with engine opposite Stafford no 4 signal box when it was run into in the rear by the 3.45 pm express passenger train from Euston to Liverpool Lime street.

signalman’s error,He accepted the Liverpool express before the stopping train had passed through the section.

LOCATION
Trailing points with the refuge siding in the up main line.
The 1pm express pasenger train from Glasgo to London passed the up distant signal at caution and the up outer and inner home signals at  danger and collided sidelong at about 60-65 mph with the fourthwagon of goods train which was being set back off the up main line into the refuge siding to clear the loine for the express.
CAUSE;
The Driver wrongly passed the signals at danger.

Location Euston no 4 signal box up slow line
The 7.15 am electric multiple-unit from Watford to Euston,running at 20-30 mph under clear signals,crashed into the rear of the 5.30am cup final excursion from Coventry to Euston,which was standing at Euston No 4 signal box up slow line home signal ,Although all the coaches of the excursion train were gas -lit ,there was no fire.
CAUSE:
Signalman's error.
